Roles & Responsibilities

Summary

The Data Center FieldOps team is responsible for supporting all production network cabling within the data center environment. This role provides the opportunity to work with the latest network technologies alongside experienced engineers to troubleshoot and resolve complex infrastructure challenges.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Cabling & Infrastructure Support

  • Support and complete all scheduled Data Center Moves, Adds, and Changes (MACs).

  • Perform hardware installation MACs, including device labeling, power connection, and network cabling.

  • Complete hardware support work orders involving MACs, certification, troubleshooting, and break-fix activities.

  • Manage asset tracking, auditing, and daily work log/ticket updates.

  • Provide Smart Hands support within specified SLA response times (on-call duties may apply).

  • Maintain a safe and secure operating environment and report any violations.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and record keeping for operational activities.

  • Follow site security protocols, badging requirements, and data protection procedures.

  • Ensure proper logging, securing, and documentation of media storage devices.

  • Utilize network hardware components, copper and fiber infrastructure installation/testing tools, and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools.

  • Coordinate equipment and material receiving, shipping, and RMA processing.

  • Provide vendor and security escorts when required.

  • Perform routine cleaning of floors, racks, cabinets, workbenches, and operational areas.

  • Support standard and emergency operating procedures for the data center.

  • Provide status reporting on service availability, performance, and capacity utilization.

  • Conduct daily error log reviews and physical inspections covering power, cooling, and potential hazards.

  • Coordinate equipment installation and delivery schedules according to project plans.

  • Participate in on-call rotations when required.

Fiber Technician Responsibilities

  • Perform basic copper cable termination.

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding infrastructure.

  • Conduct testing including continuity testing, volt-ohmmeter usage, cable troubleshooting, and tone tracing.

  • Install fiber connectors including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP for both single-mode and multi-mode fiber.

  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords, breakout outside plant fiber, and indoor tight-buffered fiber.

  • Install fan-out kits and buffer tubes.

  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets according to TIA/EIA standards.

  • Complete required documentation such as timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, and tool tracking.

  • Perform testing using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO equipment.

  • Troubleshoot network connectivity issues using OTDR testing.

  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing for various fiber cable types.

  • Conduct building entrance splicing, maintenance splicing, and direct-buried fiber splicing.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to travel up to 25% as required.

  • Willingness to work shift schedules (8, 10, or 12 hours) including weekends and public holidays.

Physical & Professional Requirements

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and committed to continuous process improvement.

  • Professional attitude with the ability to interact with customer representatives when required.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills.

  • Comfortable working at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and move up to 75 lbs.

  • Good color vision, ability to read small print, and recognize audible signals.

  • Willingness to travel when required.

Education, Certification & Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Proficiency with required industry tools.

  • Skilled in terminating connectors for Single Mode Fiber (SMF) and Multi Mode Fiber (MMF) systems including:

    • Unicam

    • Anaerobic

    • Heat-cure methods

  • Experience testing and troubleshooting fiber systems using OTDR and PMLS tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of fiber installation experience

  • Industry certifications such as Corning or FOA

  • Experience with data center installations

  • Experience with mechanical and fusion splicing

  • Outside Plant (OSP) or confined space entry experience for fiber splicing

  • Proficiency with common trade tools including:

    • Screwdrivers

    • Torpedo level

    • Tape measure

    • Snips and pliers

    • Hammer and wrench set

    • Cable stripper

    • Flashlight and gloves

    • Punch tool

    • Tone set

    • Crimp tool

    • Krone / 3M / BIX tools
