[What the role is]

Most Positive Workplace Collaboration Award – Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) Awards 2025

Ranked #19 for The Straits Times Singapore’s Best Employers 2024 & 2025

The Advanced Materials Technology Centre is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Materials Scientist/Engineer to join our innovative team. The successful candidate will contribute to applied R&D projects in the built environment sector, focusing on the development of sustainable and functional cementitious materials.

The role will involve the design and evaluation of advanced cement composites incorporating industrial by-products, with particular emphasis on fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) ash upcycling, 3D printable cementitious materials for automated construction, and functional foamed cement composites for acoustic insulation.

As a key technical contributor, the successful candidate will support innovation projects in collaboration with local built environment enterprises, participate in product development and pilot-scale validation, and contribute to capability building through technical training and mentorship.

[What you will be working on]

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage innovation projects in the development of functional cementitious materials for built environment applications, including:
    • Cement composite formulation incorporating industrial by-products (e.g., FCC ash, slag)
    • Development of 3D printable cement composites for automated construction
    • Development of foamed cement composites for acoustic insulation applications
  • Oversee end-to-end material development and validation, including:
    • Experimental design, mixture formulation, and laboratory testing
    • Characterization of fresh and hardened material properties (e.g., rheology, setting time, mechanical performance)
    • Functional performance evaluation such as 3D printing trials and acoustic testing
    • Pilot-scale trials and engineering validation in collaboration with industry partners
  • Provide technical consultation and R&D support to built environment enterprises on sustainable construction materials and waste valorisation.
  • Contribute to knowledge transfer and capability development, including delivering professional training sessions and workshops in construction materials technology.
  • Mentor interns and supervise student R&D projects related to sustainable cementitious materials.
  • Collaborate with academic researchers and industry partners on joint innovation and translational research projects.

[What we are looking for]

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Construction Materials, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline from a reputable university.
  • 2–4 years of relevant experience in cementitious materials, construction materials, sustainable materials development, or industrial waste valorisation. Relevant research experience gained during postgraduate studies may be considered.
  • Solid understanding of cement composite formulation and material characterisation, including properties such as flowability, setting time, rheology, and mechanical strength.
  • Experience in experimental design and laboratory testing of cementitious or related construction materials.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following areas is advantageous:
    • Rheology and mixture design of cementitious materials
    • 3D concrete printing or additive manufacturing for construction
    • Foamed or lightweight cement composites
    • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of construction materials
    • Industrial by-product utilisation in cement-based materials
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research and product development within the built environment or construction materials sector.
  • Strong project coordination and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Self-motivated, independent, and able to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong interest in sustainable construction materials and circular economy solutions.
  • Experience in cement-based materials or concrete technology will be an advantage.
