Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Fellow position in the Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Our laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of human genetics, functional genomics, molecular biology and cardiometabolic disease, with a particular interest in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying obesity, dyslipidaemia, atherosclerosis and related metabolic disorders. We combine human genetic and multi-omics approaches with cellular and animal models, CRISPR-based functional genomics and high-throughput functional studies to identify and validate disease-relevant biological pathways and therapeutic targets.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and collaborative research team and will lead and contribute to ongoing projects investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cardiometabolic diseases. The candidate will have opportunities to work across multiple experimental platforms, including molecular and cellular biology, functional genomics, CRISPR screening, stem cell-derived models, multi-omics approaches and preclinical disease models.

The appointment will be made on a contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Purpose of the post

The Research Fellow will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other members of the research team to conduct high-quality research aimed at identifying and characterising novel genes, pathways and therapeutic targets involved in cardiometabolic diseases.

The successful candidate will be expected to take substantial responsibility for the design, execution and interpretation of research projects, contribute to the development of new research directions, prepare manuscripts for publication, and participate actively in the scientific activities of the laboratory.

Main duties and responsibilities

The Research Fellow will be accountable to the Principal Investigator and will be expected to:

1. Design, plan and conduct independent research projects related to cardiometabolic disease, functional genomics and molecular and cellular biology;
2. Perform and optimise experimental approaches relevant to the assigned projects, which may include molecular biology, cell culture, gene perturbation, CRISPR-based approaches, biochemical assays, imaging, high-throughput functional studies, omics technologies and/or animal models;
3. Analyse, interpret and integrate experimental data, including data generated from genetic, genomic and functional studies;
4. Develop and validate cellular and molecular models for investigating novel disease-associated genes and pathways;
5. Maintain accurate and comprehensive research records and ensure that experiments are conducted in accordance with institutional research, biosafety and ethical requirements;
6. Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to scientific reports, presentations and grant applications;
7. Present research findings at laboratory meetings, departmental seminars and scientific conferences;
8. Work collaboratively with other members of the laboratory and external collaborators across different disciplines;
9. Provide scientific guidance and training to junior researchers, research assistants and students where appropriate; and
10. Contribute to the overall scientific development and collaborative research environment of the laboratory.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

(a) Hold a PhD degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences or another closely related discipline;

(b) Have a strong research background and demonstrated experience in molecular and cellular biology and/or functional genomics;

(c) Have expertise in one or more relevant experimental areas, such as mammalian cell culture, molecular cloning, CRISPR-based gene perturbation, functional screening, biochemical assays, stem cell models, next-generation sequencing, multi-omics technologies or animal disease models;

(d) Have a strong record of scientific research appropriate to career stage, preferably demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications;

(e) Be able to independently design experiments, troubleshoot technical problems, analyse data critically and interpret results in the context of the broader scientific literature;

(f) Be highly motivated, organised and rigorous, with the ability to manage research projects and priorities effectively;

Candidates with experience in cardiovascular or metabolic disease research, macrophage biology, lipid metabolism, human genetics, spatial or single-cell omics, or mouse models of cardiometabolic disease are particularly encouraged to apply.
