[What the role is]

You will play a crucial role in supporting the socio-emotional well-being and holistic development of students at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP). As an Socio-Emotional (SE) Counsellor, you will provide professional counselling services, early identification and intervention for at-risk students and crisis management support within a school-based setting. You will work closely with academic staff, Personal Mentors (PEMs), parents and external partners to ensure coordinated care and timely support for students facing personal, psychological, and/or academic-related challenges.

In addition, you will design and deliver psychoeducational programmes, contribute to institutional mental health initiatives, and support the strengthening of NYP’s ecosystem of care. The role requires a trauma-informed, student-centred approach, strong stakeholder engagement and the ability to navigate complex cases while promoting resilience, well-being and a safe campus environment.

[What you will be working on]

Primary responsibilities:

  • Attend to referrals from staff, parents, peers and students themselves in person, through the telephone and emails
  • Conduct individual and/or group counselling sessions
  • Attend to counselling administration
    • documentation of the counselling sessions
    • respond back to referral source (staff and/or parents)
    • consult with staff and/or parents regarding student’s issues
    • make appointments to meet and work with parents where applicable
    • arrange for referrals to outside agencies with discussions and follow-up with the staff from the agencies.
    • data entry and report writing
  • Attend to crisis cases
    • working with staff to attend to students at risk in Student Support Office or elsewhere in campus
    • assess risk and safety issues and collaborate with students on initiating parents’ involvement.
    • contact parents to come to Student Support Office to manage the crisis in terms of decision making on safety; may involve bringing students to the A&E in hospital.

Secondary Responsibilities:

Involvement in upstream work; mainly in the early detection and prevention work that involved:

  • training of staff and students to equip them with skillsets and awareness to better respond and support to students, especially those who are transiting into polytechnic environment.
  • contributing to the auditing and quality control of the mental wellness curriculum to create awareness of mental health issues in students’ lives.
  • supporting and contributing to co-curricular programs that enhance mental health awareness and well-being in students.
  • involvement in ongoing development of academic staff’ skillsets in pastoral care.

[What we are looking for]

  • Relevant qualification in Counselling, Psychology, or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant counselling experience with late adolescents and young adults (17- 30 years old)
  • Strong experience in crisis management, suicide risk assessment and safety planning
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct individual and group counselling effectively
  • Experience working with families, educators and multi‑disciplinary partners
  • Good documentation, case management and professional communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast‑paced educational environment with complex and sensitive cases
  • Demonstrates strong IT proficiency and data analysis skills to support case documentation, analyse student well-being trends and contribute to reporting, programme evaluation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Proficient in conducting talks and workshops on adolescents and mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team
